Social Services Volunteering Scheme
What the Scheme is about……
The Social Services Volunteering Scheme specifically recruits, trains and supports volunteers on behalf of Social Services who are then placed with individual service users or Social Services establishments.
The Scheme is a partnership between Neath Port Talbot Social Services and Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service.
One of the key roles of NPTCVS is to promote volunteering opportunities and to support the growing network of volunteers.
NPTCVS operates the the Social Services Volunteering Scheme through the work of the Scheme Co-ordinator.
Being a Social Services Volunteer
Volunteers can be linked with either individuals or groups of people who have been referred by Social Services. These could be children, older people, people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities or mental health problems - people who are in need of support from Social Services.
Volunteers can help people in a number of ways with a variety of activities:
- Accompanying people on shopping trips or when they visit friends
- Calling to a person's home for a chat.
- Going to the cinema or on a day trip
- Offering moral support if people are learning new skills at classes.
- Helping people become involved in new activities or to join a local club.
Volunteers are not a substitute for paid staff but complement the services already provided by Social Services and other organisations. Volunteers do not provide basic care such a cleaning and bathing, and should not be asked to handle money on behalf of a service user.
Independent Visiting Schemes
Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service provides Independent Visiting Schemes on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Social Services Department and Hillside Secure Children’s Centre.
The schemes are for those children and young people, living in care or detained, who have little or no contact with their parents.
Independent Visitors provide support and a listening ear for the children and young people they are linked with. The role also aims to ensure that the best interests of the child or young person are promoted at all times.
If you would like further information, or would like to become a volunteer, please contact the Volunteer Unit on 01639 631387 or click here.
The Enablers Project
The Enablers Project offers support to parents of disabled children through a befriending service.
There are currently volunteering opportunities within the project for befrienders.
Our volunteers are parents, carers and family members of children with special needs who can
• provide one to one support in a non judgemental and friendly way.
• sign post you to other services.
• Listen when you need to talk
• Provide flexible support through regular telephone calls, meeting for coffee etc
• Allow parent carers the opportunity to be themselves and not just a carer.
Do you have a few minutes a week to spare?
Would you like to help ?
If so please contact:
Enablers Project Co-ordinator at Neath Port Talbot CVS on 01639 631387.
